Jian Wang Joins Si-Yo Music Society Foundation Roster as Master Artist
NEW YORK, June 19, 2018 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Si-Yo Music Society Foundation has welcomed Jian Wang, considered one of the world's leading cellists, to its artist roster as a Master Artist.
Born in Xi'an, China, Wang attended the primary school of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music; while there, he received international attention when he performed the Elgar Cello Sonata in the 1979 documentary From Mao to Mozart: Isaac Stern in China. He later traveled to the United States and graduated from the Yale School of Music.
Over the course of his storied career, Wang has performed as a soloist with orchestras including the Boston Symphony, London Symphony, Berlin Philharmonic and Czech Philharmonic. He has also made numerous recordings including the Brahms's Double Concerto with Gil Shaham and the Berlin Philharmonic under Claudio Abbado, and Bach Cello Suites.
Wang's addition to the Si-Yo roster has special significance; the 1622 A & H Amati cello he plays was loaned to him by the family of the late Sau-Wing Lam, one of the Foundation's original founders.
"The Lams gave me a chance to be a musician; they gave me a chance in life," Wang recalled. "I am very honored to be a member of the Si-Yo music community. I hope more and more young musicians will benefit from this wonderful organization."
"Maestro Wang's deep devotion to the purity and sanctity of music, and to the art of its performance, has enchanted audiences around the world ever since his brief but riveting appearance in From Mao to Mozart," said Chairwoman and President Eva Lerner-Lam. "We look forward with great anticipation to his guidance and mentorship of the next generation of Si-Yo Artists™."
Wang joins a roster of international artists who are Si-Yo's ambassadors of Western classical music. The Foundation provides these musicians with global teaching and performance opportunities, an instrument lending program and an artistic support network.
