Joanna Chikwe, MD, Appointed Chairman of Cardiovascular Surgery at Mount Sinai St. Luke’s and Mount Sinai Roosevelt
New York, NY (PRWEB) May 05, 2015 -- The Mount Sinai Health System has established a new Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Mount Sinai St. Luke’s, to serve the communities of Mount Sinai St. Luke’s and Mount Sinai Roosevelt.
Joanna Chikwe, MD, Professor of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, is the inaugural Chairman of the new Department. Dr. Chikwe will lead an established team of surgeons and clinician specialists, in partnership with the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at The Mount Sinai Hospital.
The new Department spearheads a cross-disciplinary collaboration with Mount Sinai Heart, offering exceptional guideline-focused patient care across the full spectrum of cardiovascular disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
Dr. Chikwe is an accomplished cardiac surgeon with an established clinical practice in aortic and mitral valve reconstruction and coronary revascularization, and specialized expertise in minimally invasive surgery techniques. Her contributions to clinical research have informed decision-making in cardiovascular surgery, and include landmark publications in JAMA and JACC, most recently in collaboration with Mount Sinai’s Department of Population Health and Policy.
In addition to her role as Chairman of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Mount Sinai St. Luke’s, Dr. Chikwe serves as Program Director of the Thoracic Surgery Residency and Advanced Fellowship Programs for the Mount Sinai Health System. Dr. Chikwe graduated from Oxford University and completed her cardiothoracic surgery residency in London, before being recruited to Mount Sinai in 2006. She is an award-winning author of seven surgical textbooks, and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons.
