Johns Hopkins University Announces Frederick CREST Classes for Fall 2016
Frederick, MD (PRWEB) July 07, 2016 -- Advanced Academic Programs (AAP), a division within Johns Hopkins University (JHU), has announced two classes that will be hosted at Frederick’s new Regional Higher Education Center, the Frederick Center for Research and Education in Science and Technology, better known as CREST, starting Fall 2016.
Both of the Frederick CREST-hosted classes will use a mixed modality teaching model that combines onsite and online learning, allowing students needed flexibility and further academic opportunities. The onsite component, comprised of one class per week, will be located at one of CREST’s local higher education partners, Frederick Community College (FCC).
“FCC is delighted to serve as the inaugural location for the first graduate level STEM courses to be offered by Johns Hopkins University through CREST,” said FCC President Elizabeth Burmaster, a member of CREST’s Governing Board. “CREST empowers all levels of education to work together to promote STEM education for our Frederick County residents and our STEM employers.”
By hosting JHU AAP classes, CREST will provide a local onsite alternative to students who would otherwise have to travel to other JHU AAP locations or take the courses entirely online. CREST also provides a unique opportunity for local Frederick student cohorts to interact and collaborate, thereby offering an enriched learning environment focused on area STEM activities.
“These classes will continue to put advanced learning at the fingertips of Frederick residents, and AAP is happy to be a part of this great community,” said Brandon Boulter, Assistant Dean of AAP at JHU. “Our hope is to enhance local learning, and we look forward to working with some of the world’s brightest students located right here in Frederick.” The first two JHU AAP classes hosted are Biochemistry (410.601.91), part of the M.S. in Biotechnology program at JHU AAP, and Molecular Biology (410.602.91), part of the M.S. in Bioinformatics program at JHU AAP. Dr. Mizanur Rahman, an adjunct instructor, will teach both courses.
“We are very pleased to announce these offerings from Johns Hopkins University at FCC and to see that prospective CREST-based students have already begun to apply for these programs,” said Sue Houghton, Planning Director for CREST. “The mission of CREST has always been driven by the recruitment and retention needs of our area STEM employers and by the unmet graduate level STEM needs of the region. We will be reaching out even further to the Frederick STEM community to make sure they know this exceptional opportunity is now available to them”.
The Biochemistry class is scheduled to begin August 31, with the Molecular Biology class expected to begin September 1. Prospective students interested in either, or both, of these courses, must be accepted into one of the master’s programs listed above and can apply to the programs year-round
To apply or to learn more, students should go to http://www.FrederickCREST.org. Once an application is completed, prospective students can expect an admissions response in approximately 30 days.
In order for CREST to host the onsite portions of these classes, there must be at least 15 students in the cohort for each class. If that cohort threshold is not met, students who’ve registered for a class will be able to take it online or at one of our other campuses if available.
