Johnson's Landscaping Helps Homeowner Work Towards LEED Certification
Chevy Chase, MD (PRWEB) January 08, 2015 -- Johnson's Landscaping is currently in the midst of a large-scale landscaping project with hopes of helping a new Bethesda homeowner achieve a silver certification in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).
"The owner is going for silver certification, and we're happy to be a part of the puzzle that she needs in order to achieve this goal. The owner has done a lot; it's a new building and the house itself has a lot of points towards LEED Certification," said Matt Johnson, owner of Johnson's Landscaping. Johnson's Landscaping, which has served the area since 1960, is owned by Matt Johnson, Jimmy Johnson, and Charlie Johnson.
In order for a building or property to become LEED certified, builders and landscapers must ensure projects fulfill specific criteria set by the certification board. LEED certifications are based on a point system which ranks a building or property with silver, gold, or platinum status.
For this current project, Johnson's Landscaping and the new homeowner are focusing on the collection and distribution of existing rainwater on the property. In addition to installing a permeable paver driveway that collects water runoff and evenly distributes it throughout the property, Johnson's Landscaping also ensured excess water coming from nearby properties flowed into the appropriate underground water storage containers located on the property. A dry creek, or an area consisting of river rocks where water flows during heavy rains, was also installed.
Johnson's Landscaping began the project in October of last year and is scheduled to finish this month, however, they will need to return in March to install plants native to the area. In addition to being drought resistant, these plants also help prevent erosion. In the spring, the homeowner will be working with an irrigation company in order to use some of the collected rainwater to irrigate the installed plants. While there is still grass in some areas, Johnson's landscaping limited this as much as possible because grass is not considered sustainable.
Johnson is hopeful this project will not only help market the company as experienced and versatile in all aspects of landscaping, but encourage others to pursue environmentally friendly landscape design. "We took on this project because it's a challenge, and wanted to help the client reach her goal of LEED Certification. We really enjoy working with those who want to build a sustainable landscape -- it is certainly the future of landscaping. We're starting to see more people opting for this, especially when drainage is concerned," Johnson explained.
