Judy Maggio to Speak Up for Seniors at National Senior Citizens' Day Celebration
Austin, Texas (PRWEB) July 30, 2014 -- While National Senior Citizens Day tends to fly beneath the radar as a National Holiday, a committed group of Austinites has set out to change that this year.
Cyndi Cummings, founder of the Austin Senior Resource Alliance (ASRA), announced today that Judy Maggio will speak at the First Annual Seniors Awards Luncheon in celebration of National Senior Citizen’s Day on August 21 at the Renaissance Arboretum Hotel.
The city’s best-known broadcast journalist, Maggio’s departed KEYE News this May, after more than three decades on the air in Austin. Deeply rooted in every facet of the Austin community, Maggio shares the commitment of the Austin Senior Resource Alliance to shine the spotlight on this dynamic segment of the population.
"Seniors are a vital thread in the fiber of this community and too often, their important contributions are overlooked,” Maggio said. “Much of my volunteer work is centered on seniors. From delivering Meals on Wheels to singing at local nursing homes, my life is enriched in many ways from the wisdom and kindness of Austin seniors.”
National Senior Citizens Day dates back to 1988 when then President Ronald Reagan declared August 21 to be a day set aside to in observance of Senior Citizens in the United States who were making positive contributions in their communities. The holiday was also created to sharpen societal focus on the social, health and economic issues that affect senior citizens.
“Despite demographic shifts toward an aging population, our culture remains largely focused on youth,” Cummings noted. “Fully 10,000 members of the Baby Boom generation – the largest demographic block in the history of the United States – are now turning 65 every day, and considering that one in every four home sellers is over the age of 65, according to research conducted by the National Association of REALTORs®, it’s clear that the rapidly growing seniors population merits heightened attention from the real estate industry, as well as every segment of society.”
A REALTOR®, based in Austin, Texas, Cummings is among the first real estate professionals in the country to have earned the prestigious Certified Senior Housing Professional® (CSHP) designation. As such, she is distinctly qualified to assist members the mature market with all of the complexities involved in late-in-life transitions.
The National Senior Citizens’ Day Luncheon and Awards ceremony will be held at the Renaissance Arboreum Hotel in Austin on August 21, 2014 at 11 a.m.
