The owner has long been a collector of Asian art and antiques. Over 30 years of acquisitions combined with extensive research and study of the history, culture and craftsmanship from this region has grown his appreciation in the exceptional master artisanship demonstrated in this genre.
He enjoyed and appreciated the how and the why of the old historic superior art techniques, artisanship and technology involved. The owner has displayed and enjoyed these one of a kind artistic treasures in his homes and properties over many years.
The auction will present exceptional examples of Chinese decorative arts accumulated by a dedicated collector over his lifetime.
The hardwood furnishings include huanghuali and zitan altar tables from the 18th century, as well as beautifully carved 19th century rosewood chairs with marble panels and important monumental screens.
A number of fine porcelain pieces will also be featured, including a very rare double walled lattice vase from the Qianlong period. To appear as lot #5092 the vase is decorated with incised floral designs with the Imperial yellow glaze and is estimated at $300,000-$500,000.
While another highlight of the collection is a Chinese Tang-Sung Dynasty stone, head of the Buddha, measuring 17" high by 10" diameter valued at $80,000-$120,000.
There are several important monumental screens including a 17th century twelve panel coromandel screen from the Kangxi Period, depicting the battle of General Guo Ziyi (697-781 A.D.), purchased from the Durand estate, from the descendants of John Milton Durand (1823-1907), kept in the Durand Mansion in Pasadena, California valued at $200,000-$300,000. As well as a Chinese lacquered wood, throne screen of tripartite construction with three panels topped by openwork carved crests depicting dragons, the panel surfaces heavily carved on both sides valued at $100,000-$200,000. A similar example is in the Forbidden City Palace Museum, Beijing, China.
