Kearney Dog Sled Races Provides Boost to North Muskoka Economy Reports Northridge Inn & Resort
Almaguin Highlands, Ontario (PRWEB) December 19, 2013 -- Celebrating its 20th Anniversary, the Kearney Dog Sled Races return once again to the Almaguin Highlands in Ontario’s Near-North tourist region. This extremely popular annual outdoor winter event has proven itself over the years to be important to the local tourism-based economy as it attracts thousands of spectators and participants to the Almaguin Highlands from across Canada and the United States. Almaguin resorts, stores and restaurants enjoy a boost in business each year from the scores of visitors who travel to the area for the races. For many, the Kearney Races are considered to be the highlight of the winter season.
The Kearney Dog Sled Race weekend, which consists of several races, including a 120-mile race, a 40-mile race, a 6-mile race, a 4-mile race, ski joring and a kids and mutts race, takes place February 8 and 9, 2014 in the town of Kearney, Ontario. The highlight of the Kearney race weekend is the 120-mile sled dog race which takes place over Saturday and Sunday. The scheduled dog sled races attract teams from across North America to compete for $18,000 in prize money. In addition to Dog Sled events, there will also be a wide range of fun activities for spectators, including special meals served through the weekend, silent auctions and vendors tables, antique snowmobiles display and parade, chain saw carving demonstrations, kid’s activities, dog obedience demonstrations, and live entertainment.
“Almaguin tourist operators always look forward to the return of the Kearney Dog Sled Races. It’s a fun family event that gets better every year,” says Michael Piraino, co-owner of Northridge Inn & Resort (http://www.northridgeinn.com), an Almaguin lakefront resort. “The race weekend not only brings tourist dollars to the area but also helps to increase the public’s awareness of the Almaguin Highlands. The Kearney Dog Sled Races, along with other widely promoted area events, have helped to put the Almaguin Highlands on people’s radar as a great place to vacation in Ontario. Over the past few years, we’ve seen an increase in winter tourism. This is due to events like the Kearney Races that help to get the word out about the advantages of vacationing in the Almaguin Highlands, especially in winter. Along with exceptional ice-fishing and dog sledding, we have some of the best snowmobile and cross country skiing trails in the province. And, our location, just north of Muskoka, ensures that we have plenty of snow when many other areas do not,” adds Piraino.
