Keiser University Recognizes Basketball Coach Rollie Massimino’s 800th Career Win
West Palm Beach, Florida (PRWEB) December 20, 2016 -- Keiser University’s Flagship Campus proudly announces that Head Men’s Basketball Coach, Rollie Massimino, dunked win number 800 of his illustrious career.
The legendary coach, who has held head coaching positions at Stony Brook, Villanova, UNLV and Cleveland State, coached his 800th win for the Keiser University Seahawks, Wednesday evening, over Trinity Baptist (74-47).
Deion McClenton pulled down a double-double with 12 points and 13 assists. Andrija Sarenac added a team-high 18 points, and said after the game that the Seahawks played one of their best games of the season, because they were proud to get Massimino his milestone win.
Coach Massimino, who is 82 years young, is the ninth head coach in history to win at least 800 games, having spent a minimum of 10 seasons coaching at the Division 1 level. Massimino becomes the third active head coach, joining Duke's Mike Krzyzewski and Syracuse's Jim Boeheim, as active coaches with at least 800 wins.
Earlier this year, Rollie Massimino was a candidate for the prestigious Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame (Class of 2016). In his tenure with the Seahawks, the team has produced a 282-68 record, with runs to the national semifinals and finals. In 2011 with the Seahawks, Coach Massimino was named the NAIA National Coach of the Year and earned the Rawlings National Coach of the Year in 2012.
“For decades, scores of student-athletes have been inspired by the values Coach Massimino has consistently exhibited on and off the court,” said Dr. Arthur Keiser, Chancellor of Keiser University. “While he is most known for his national championship victory in 1985, his tremendously positive impact on his players’ academic, athletic, and life experiences make him legendary. On behalf of the entire Keiser University community, we are honored to celebrate Coach Massimino, his players, and assistant coaches on their historic win,” Keiser added.
In October of this year, Dr. Keiser announced that the university will be adding a new football program at its Flagship campus in West Palm Beach, Florida. As the national search for a head coach winds down, the first official game is expected to be played in Fall 2018. Completion of the stadium, track, and additional athletic facilities are anticipated for completion late Summer 2018.
Keiser University now has 22 intercollegiate athletic teams competing in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) division. The Seahawks have won four national championships and boast 67 All-American student-athlete scholars from over 39 countries.
