Kelowna Hotel Tips Hat to Fellow Environmental Stewards
Kelowna, British Columbia (PRWEB) April 21, 2015 -- A Kelowna hotel that was named Champion for the Environment at the Kelowna Civic and Community Awards two years ago is now sponsoring the same award to support other environmental stewards in the community.
The BEST WESTERN PLUS Kelowna Hotel & Suites received the Champion for the Environment award in the business category in 2012. Last year, the ‘green’ and pet friendly hotel in Kelowna began sponsoring the award, and the hotel has decided to renew its sponsorship for the upcoming 40th Annual Civic and Community Awards.
“It’s always rewarding to be recognized by your peers and the community for efforts that we really believe in, and that we practice every day,” says hotel CEO and partner Greg Salloum. “And for us, part of being a leader in sustainability is recognizing and supporting the efforts of others who are out there making a difference.”
Over the last 20 years, the Harvey Avenue Best Western hotel has become renown not only in the Okanagan business community and in the tourism industry for its environmental initiatives, from providing electric vehicle charging stations and a LEED Silver environmental wing to huge strides in reducing energy and water, despite washing linens and towels for hundreds of rooms each week. In addition to earning the city’s Champion for the Environment award, the hotel has been certified as a Green Tourism Gold hotel and a 4 Green Key Hotel along with numerous other environmental awards.
“While we live and breathe our environmental commitment in our business, we think it’s important for us to recognize other businesses and individuals whose environmental stewardship is helping to make Kelowna a great city to live, work and play in,” says Brenda Rayburn, Director of Sales and Marketing.
The Champion for the Environment award is given to someone whose actions and achievements have shown outstanding environmental leadership or innovative environmental contributions, having a direct benefit on the city of Kelowna.
Finalists for the 2015 Champion for the Environment award are:
**Individual Category**
Christian Brandt
Casey Hamilton
Barry Jones
**Business Category**
1-800-Got-Junk
St. Hubertus Estate Winery
The winners will be announced at an awards gala that will recognize volunteers, artists, athletes and business leaders through 17 awards. The ceremony takes place April 30 at the Kelowna Community Theatre.
“We are pleased with the exceptional nominations received in each of the award categories for this milestone year,” said Louise Roberts, Community and Neighbourhood Services Manager. “The awards highlight our residents, businesses and organizations that have made a significant contribution to making our city a better place to live.”
