Keystone Ford Unveils 2017 Ford Fusion with Pothole Detection System
Chambersburg, PA (PRWEB) September 27, 2016 -- New computer technology on the 2017 Ford Fusion V6 Sport now available at Keystone Ford can sense a pothole when the front tire strikes it, and it can adjust the car's suspension to its stiffest setting in milliseconds. With this feature, the tire doesn't fall as deeply into the hole. The impact is less jarring than before because it minimizes both tire and wheel damage. It also protects the vehicle's suspension and other sensitive components.
The dealership now has all 2017 Ford Fusion models on display. The V6 Sport's pothole detection system works by instantaneously determining potholes through 12 high-resolution sensors. It's linked to a computer that freezes the car's front wheel before it completely drops into the hole. Once the front wheel has reached the pothole, the computer then knows the rear wheel is also ready to hit the pothole. Sensors scan every two milliseconds for continual adjustment to help the vehicle better withstand the worst pothole-riddled roads.
"All drivers know that cringe that comes with a big hit on a huge pothole you couldn't swerve to avoid," said Clayton Black, General Manager, Keystone Ford. "That's now gone because this system dramatically reduces the harsh impact potholes cause," he added. Central Pennsylvania is notorious for severe winters and the significant potholes that result. Nationally, a study by the American Automobile Association (AAA) revealed repairing pothole damage to all vehicles has totaled more than $15 billion since 2011.
Ford set up a test track in Belgium to create 1.2 miles of severely potholed roads to evaluate the technology before introducing it. An added benefit of these trials was knowledge gained by Ford engineers to improve its automobile frames to withstand better driving on the world's worst pavements.
