Kickstarter Project Aims to Create Million-Piece Glass Artwork to Honor USA
London, England (PRWEB) December 27, 2013 -- A new Kickstarter project aims to create 3 huge artworks in honor of America from a million tiny pieces of hand-cut stained glass and 3,000 jewels, including over 200 diamonds. Project backers are offered affordable artworks containing topaz, sapphires, rubies, emeralds and diamonds in return for pledges.
The 3 artworks, together titled ‘U.S.3’, as in ‘United States Three’, will take British artist Chris Chamberlain and a team of assistants 6,000 man-hours to create. 6 miles of glass cuts will be needed just to make their glass pieces - equal to the length of 88 NFL football pitches and greater than the height of Mount Everest.
Chamberlain will use a brand new art technique that he invented to create the 3 artworks, titled 'Spirit of America', 'The Great Seal' and 'The Stars and Stripes'. Combined, they will be made from one million tiny pieces of stained glass, each cut by hand without the use of machines. Placed with the glass will be 3,000 jewels with a total weight of over 2,600 carats.
When the artworks are complete, 3 world records will be applied for.
Asked why he aims to create U.S.3 for America, Chamberlain said, "If I was American, I'd be proud of being American."
The Kickstarter campaign ends on Sunday February 2 and aims to raise £200,000 (about $328,000). As with all Kickstarter projects, the 'U.S.3' project is 'all-or-nothing'. If it falls just $1 short of its funding goal at its end, the project will not go ahead and backers will pay nothing. But if its funding goal is reached or exceeded, then backers will be charged on February 2 - never any sooner.
U.S.3 will be made in Sierra Leone, West Africa - the 8th poorest country in the world and a nation Chamberlain has sought to assist for over a decade. In pursuit of that, Chamberlain devised and created 'Jewel of the Universe’, an artwork he devised and crafted from a third of a million pieces of hand-cut stained glass micro-mosaic, and effectively the prototype for the three U.S.3 artworks.
When complete, U.S.3 will be shipped to the USA and donated to a public institution. Project backers will vote on where exactly they are gifted to.
Most of the project’s rewards are artworks that combine hand-cut stained glass micro-mosaic with jewels. They include a £100 (about $164) Stars and Stripes artwork created from over 1,200 pieces of stained glass and 50 topaz gems. The project's rewards also include micro-mosaic state outlines such as California, Texas, Florida, New York, Illinois and Ohio.
At the top end of the project rewards scale, there are over 130 one-off state and city portraits, each made from 25,000 pieces of micro-mosaic and 250 jewels including 20 diamonds. Yours for a pledge of £5,000 (about $8,200).
Their topics include each of the 50 US states, the likes of Beverly Hills, Malibu and Manhattan, and 77 cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Atlanta, Houston, Philadelphia, DC and Boston.
Finally, by far the largest, most detailed reward of the U.S.3 project is a Stars & Stripes artwork with more than 50,000 pieces of micro-mosaic and 500 jewels totalling over 400 carats. It is offered to backers in a limited edition of 100 at a pledge level of £4,900 (about $8,000).
