Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) March 17, 2014 -- The Hunger Games: Catching Fire wasn’t just the biggest box office smash of the year, it was the best movie of the year, according to kids. With nearly 24,000 votes cast, the 8th Annual KidsPickFlicks.com PICK Awards reveal which movies and performances kids thought were the best of 2013, as well as one that wasn’t so great.

ICK Movie of the Year: The Lone Ranger (not the worst, but the film kids found most disappointing)
Winning with 38% of the vote, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire beat out some of the biggest movies of the year, like Frozen, Monsters University and Despicable Me 2. Catching Fire’s Katniss Everdeen was also voted PICK Hero. “Catching Fire won over kids because it was action-packed with some unexpectedly funny scenes, an amazing plot twist and a cliffhanger – so the audience was left holding their breath,” says Riley Roberts, the 12-year old president of KidsPickFlicks.
The youth who won the acting categories made a major impact: PICK Actor Ty Simpkins not only kept up with Robert Downey Jr., he proved to be an excellent comic foil to Tony Stark in Iron Man 3. Relatively unknown in the kid world, PICK Actress Sophie Nélisse was mesmerizing while staying in command of difficult subject matter in The Book Thief. In the role of Bumpty, PICK Scene Stealer Kamil McFadden managed to steal the focus from comedic giants Adam Sandler, Chris Rock and Kevin James.
The Wolverine dominated the other Superhero Movies, winning with a whopping 68%. Kids may like their superheroes hairy, but they like their bad guys to be clever: the trickster Loki (Tom Hiddleston) from Thor: The Dark World took 61% of the vote to win PICK Villain.
Frozen had two wins: PICK New Character for Josh Gad’s warm-hearted snowman Olaf (triumphing over Catching Fire’s dashing Finnick Odair and the imaginative Foodimals from Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2) and PICK Song for “Let It Go,” which is also nominated for an Academy Award.
Defying conventional thinking, Mindless Behavior’s Concert Documentary All Around the World beat out the docu's from One Direction and Justin Bieber.
Interesting to note this is the second year in a row that kids felt let down by Johnny Depp. The Lone Ranger was voted the ICK of the Year, the film that was the most disappointing. Depp’s Dark Shadows took this category last year. KidsPickFlicks’ 19-year old founder Cole McNamara explains, “Like its climax, The Lone Ranger is an expensive train wreck that takes a legendary character and burdens it with a confusing storyline with bland to downright offensive characters.”
