King Kullen Helps Customers Choose Best Produce
Bethpage, NY (PRWEB) March 31, 2014 -- Summer is on its way, and with it comes the best in fresh produce. This summer season, King Kullen is offering the best produce options from local farms on Long Island. The supermarket is a proud supporter of local farms and enjoys helping out the local economy.
“Our objective is to provide fresh locally grown produce while reducing our carbon footprint, as well as preserving local farmland for future generations,” said Vice President of Perishables Joe Forte.
King Kullen has been committed to buying locally-grown Long Island produce from Long Island farmers for more than 15 years. They purchase thousands of cases of locally-grown produce every summer, as well as every fall. They also have signage in-store, featuring a few of the local farmers who supply produce to the supermarket. Among these farmers are Phillip Schmitt & Son, Wells Farm and Densieski Farms.
The original farmstead of Phillip Schmitt & Son was established in the late 1800s in Rosedale, Queens. Over the years, the farm has grown to become the thriving family-run business that it is today, spanning four generations, with three of those generations still involved in the farm’s operation. Today, the farm grows more than 30 types of produce, including red and green leaf lettuces, cabbage and a variety of root vegetables.
The Wells Farm, located in Aquebogue, is proud to call itself the oldest continually run farm in the U.S. Started in 1651, Wells Farm is now a national historic landmark. They grow green and yellow zucchini, a variety of fall squash and asparagus, for which they are famous.
Densieski Farms also grows a wide variety of crops, including zucchini, cauliflower, potatoes, sweet corn, cucumbers, tomatoes and broccoli. The farm is located in East Quogue and has been family-run for more than 90 years.
King Kullen looks forward to offering their customers high quality produce that is both fresh and locally-grown this summer season.
