Krystal Cancun Timeshare Shares History of Cancún’s Fiesta of the Virgin of Carmen
Cancun, Mexico (PRWEB) June 30, 2015 -- On July 16, the coastal citizens of Mexico celebrate La Fiesta de La Virgen del Carmen, or the Fiesta of the Virgin of Carmen.
According to Krystal Cancun Timeshare, tourists in Cancún can expect a day filled with parades, music, food, crafts and fireworks. It’s a wonderful way to immerse oneself in the local culture while taking full advantage of the hospitality of this coastal town.
To teach tourists more about this important celebration, Krystal Cancun Timeshare delves deeper into the history of this festival.
History
This celebration is particularly important in Cancún because the Virgen del Carmen is the city’s patron. Tradition states that around 1950, locals began to organize prayers and feasts in honor of the patron saint of sailors and fishermen, the Blessed dela Virgen del Carmen. Neighbors shared meals together and a musicians performed while people danced.
According to Krystal Cancun Timeshare, the Virgin of Carmen’s legend stretches even farther back into Catholic history. She is more correctly known as Nuestra Señora de Monte Carmelo. The name alludes both to Mount Carmel in Israel and one of the many manifestations of the Virgin Mary.
According to tradition, when a group of hermits followed in the Prophet Elijah’s footsteps to Mount Carmel, an image of the Virgin Mary appeared in a cloud. These men went on to found a temple in that location in her honor. After their persecution in Israel in the thirteenth century, the group moved on to Europe. As time passed, Stella Maris, as she was also known, was adopted by mariners and fishermen as their patron.
Today
There are now active Carmelite orders spread throughout the world, both male and female. Krystal Cancun Timeshare says many coastal towns in Mexico and throughout Central and South America still have fishing communities with a strong attachment to "la Reina de los Mares" (the Queen of the Seas).
Over the last decade or so, the municipal government of Cancún has taken responsibility for the organization of La Fiesta de La Virgen del Carmen. Krystal Cancun Timeshare says the festival now attracts tourists from around the world. Bands play, crowds cheer as the Virgin’s effigy is paraded through town, and fireworks fill the late dusk sky.
