L. Ron Hubbard International Illustrators of the Future Contest Now in Its 25th Year
Hollywood, CA (PRWEB) July 30, 2013 -- Inspired by best-selling author L. Ron Hubbard, the merit-based Writers of the Future Contest was initiated 30 years ago to discover and encourage talented beginning writers of science fiction and fantasy and the illustrator contest was formed 5 years later as a companion contest.
"We've have had entries from every continent on Earth except for Antarctica", said contest director Joni Labaqui. "We are very excited about the 30th year of the contest and speculate that we will have our best ever entrants as the contest becomes more known throughout the world. So far we have had illustrator entrants from 147 countries. This year I have no doubt we will increase that list."
We are looking for entries that are themed in science fiction and fantasy. You can submit to the contest either online or hard copy, your choice. Entrants must have their art in our system by midnight of the end of each quarter, Pacific Standard time, or for hardcopy entries, it must be postmarked quarterly closing date at your local post office - even if you live in China.
Each year the contest awards all winners with cash prizes, free travel and accommodations, a week-long professional workshop, and guaranteed publication in their best-selling annual speculative fiction anthology, L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers and Illustrators of the Future. Grand prize winners for writing and illustration are announced at the annual awards ceremony.
Throughout the Contest’s 25 year history, 300 illustrators have been recognized as winners, according to Labaqui. They’ve gone on to publish hundreds of thousands of illustrations, sfx art for over 31 major motion pictures with Shaun Tan - former winner and now judge of the contest-winning the Academy Award for best animated short for The Lost Thing.
“The Illustrators of the Future Contest is the most effective means for aspiring artists to make their break in the publishing industry, an industry renown for being closed to the newcomer,” Labaqui said. “That’s because our winners are chosen and judged by professional illustrators from thousands of entries worldwide.” Well-known contest judges include multiple Nebula and Hugo Award winners and finalists such as Larry Elmore (Dungeons and Dragons), Bob Eggleton, Stephan Martiniere, Cliff Nielsen (Chronicles of Narnia), Shaun Tan (The Lost Thing) to name a few.
