Labels/tags replacing fiber-based paper version; sector faster than non-label portion of global synthetic paper market, according to BCC Research
Wellesley, MA (PRWEB) June 16, 2015 -- Synthetic paper will continue to be a specialty niche market, and, although it will not significantly penetrate many of its key markets, it will provide reasonable dollar volumes and profits for most of the major players who remain in the business.
BCC Research reveals in its new report that the global synthetic paper market is expected to total 267 million pounds in 2015, and 370 million pounds by 2020, reflecting a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.7%. The non-label application segment of the synthetic paper market should increase from 156 million pounds in 2015 to 214 million pounds in 2020, with a CAGR of 6.5%. (The non-label market references original, more traditional synthetic paper products such as printed paper, maps, menus, banners, POP/signs, and graphic arts). The global synthetic paper market for label/tag applications should increase from 111 million pounds in 2015 to 156 million pounds in 2020, reflecting a CAGR of 7%.
Although synthetic paper has been commercial since the mid-1980s, this niche market has undergone substantive changes in market emphasis. Targeted at replacing fiber-based paper, synthetic paper has become an important product in the production of labels and tags. Synthetic paper products also have moved into new and interesting areas such as radio frequency identification tags/labels (RFIDs) and are looking to expand in other paper substitution markets. Synthetic paper will not significantly penetrate many of its key markets, but it will provide reasonable dollar volumes and profits for most key players in the business.
“The term ‘synthetic paper’ has not been universally defined because it is basically an opaque plastic film that is both printable and writeable. Most synthetic papers are either biaxially oriented polypropylene or high-density polyethylene , although there are sizable amounts made from polyesters and fewer from polystyrene and PVC,” explains BCC Research Melvin Schlechter. “Actually, the distinction between synthetic paper and white opaque printable films has not yet been resolved. We have used the concept that, if a company states that their product is a synthetic paper, it has been included in the study.”
