LabRoots Educational Webinar Discusses Fecal Lactoferrin Measurements in Clinical Practice
YORBA LINDA, Calif. (PRWEB) April 10, 2018 -- Intestinal inflammation is a hallmark of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), including ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. These chronic GI illnesses affect upwards of 3 million people in the United States.
Many of the symptoms in patients with IBD overlap with those observed in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a discrete and likely pathogenically pleomorphic gastrointestinal illness. Nonetheless, there is a premium on distinguishing between IBD and IBS as their treatment differs significantly.
Fecal lactoferrin testing is a non-invasive metric that can be used to help differentiate IBD and IBS patients presenting with non-specific gastrointestinal symptoms. Previous data have demonstrated that fecal lactoferrin levels may also be useful in tracking disease activity or assessing response to therapy.
In this webinar, participants will learn to recognize when fecal lactoferrin levels may be useful in tracking disease activity or assessing response to therapy. They will also learn how to use fecal lactoferrin biomarkers as a non-invasive first-step diagnostic tool to identify when scoping is most appropriate, especially in certain patient populations such as pediatrics.
The speaker for this event will be Dr. Paul Rufo, an assistant professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, as well as the program director of the HMS Fellowship in Pediatric Gastroenterology at Boston Children's Hospital. He received his medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School and an MMSc degree from Harvard Medical School. His research is focused on the development of new modalities for use in the diagnosis and interval assessment of children and adults with IBD.
