LabRoots to Host Zymo Research Webinar that Illuminates Complex Role of Epigenetics in Health and Disease
Yorba Linda, CA (PRWEB) April 06, 2016 -- With the number of scientific publications spotlighting epigenetics research surging in recent years, this rapidly advancing field is showing true promise as a key to the causation of diseases and therapeutic assistance. Zymo Research is sponsoring a new, free educational webinar, “Epigenetics in human health and disease,” which will discuss two distinct areas of biomedical research in which the dysregulation of epigenetic mechanisms plays a prominent role in disease etiology. Attendees will learn how epigenetics plays a significant role in cancer and how those mechanisms might be exploited for therapeutic benefit, and how epigenetics can influence prenatal health during pregnancy. Continuing education credits will be offered through the PACE system. The presenters are Peter Jones, PhD, DSc, research director and chief scientific officer, Van Andel Research Institute, and Nandor Than, MD, PhD, senior research fellow, Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
Dr. Jones will discuss the manifold role of epigenetics dysfunction in cancer progression, and how recent findings may present novel approaches to exploit for therapeutic development. He joined the University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles, in 1977, and served as director of the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center from 1993 to 2011. Dr. Jones’s laboratory discovered the effects of 5-azacytidine on cytosine methylation and he first established the link between DNA methylation, gene expression, and differentiation. He pioneered the field of epigenetics, particularly its role in cancer, and helped develop novel therapies for cancer. Dr. Jones’s complete bio is found on the LabRoots website.
Dr. Than will explain how a developing placenta can be influenced by the surrounding maternal environment, identify altered DNA methylation patterns at specific gene loci related to prenatal health indications, and discuss the potential role for disease diagnostics. He is director of the Systems Biology of Reproduction Laboratory at the Research Centre for Natural Sciences, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Budapest, Hungary, and holds appointments at the 1st Department of Pathology & Experimental Cancer Research and Maternity Clinic, Semmelweis University, Budapest, and the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at USC. Dr. Than’s work focuses on placental development and disease pathways of pregnancy complications using tools of high-dimensional and systems biology.
