Lake Carolina Hosts 12th “Annual Polar Bear Plunge” Community Event
Columbia, SC (PRWEB) January 15, 2015 -- This year was the 12th year that Lake Carolina hosted the Polar Bear Plunge, a chilly charity event that raises money for Children’s Charity of the Midlands. Participants donated $10 per person to make a splash into the cold water at Sunset Park. Friends, families and coworkers got together in teams to make the event even more exciting. Music, prizes, pizza, donuts, coffee and hot cocoa were available for participants, making it much more than just a dip in the water.
In total, the plunge raised $6,200. Despite the 28 degree weather, participants gathered at 10am, dressed and ready to go. Some teams got involved with the contest categories that the plunge offered. There were about 75 participants this year with many others there for support. Some of the categories and winners included:
-Oldest Polar Bear: Trish Mozdzierz (55)
-Youngest Polar Bear: Spencer Shealy, Jr (7)
-Best Individual Polar Bear: Edward Legrand
-Best Jump: 5 Horsemen: Scott Fite, Chad Humphrey, Ryan Corcoran, James Eddis, Mitchell Uehling
-Most Devoted: Spencer Shealy, Sr
-Best Spirit: Saddle Sisters - Alison Mcbhee, Aubree Rubadeau, Kelly Wright, Kenzie Cobey
All of the money raised went to Children’s Charities of the Midlands, a 501(c)3 organization that strives to improve the health, welfare and education for South Carolina’s youth. According to Lake Carolina Events Director Julia Burley, a team called ‘The Chippenwhales,’ raised a $6,116 of the total money raised. Participants ages ranged from 5 to 78 years old, making it a great way to start off the New Year.
The Chippenwhales, Lake Carolina resident Gary Matthews’ team, participated last year as well. “We love the community we live in and certainly feel blessed to have landed here,” said Matthews.
Matthews held a brunch before the plunge so that family and friends can get prepared and in a festive spirit to face the chilly water. It also serves as a great opportunity to raise more money for Children’s Charities of the Midlands.
