Largest Organic Farm in Alaska Hits the Auction Block
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (PRWEB) August 14, 2013 -- Harkening back to his childhood growing up in a Swedish farming family, Sven Ebbesson has had a deep love for agriculture all his life. Now retired as director of the University Of Alaska Medical Department, Sven has decided to let other owners share his love of the well-tilled soil.
Sven emigrated from Sweden to Winfield, Kan., when he was 15 years old. He met his wife, Barbara, a nurse, in Germany while stationed in the Army. Sven earned his doctorate in anatomy and has had a prestigious academic career in medical research. This career led his family to settle down in Alaska, where he began his own farm. Sven continued working on the farm even after his retirement from the university in 2000.
“Following the purchase of our first tract of land, Barbara and I – along with our three sons – began clearing land in order to grow potatoes,” Ebbesson said. “The soil fertility in concert with the area’s climate makes the land ideal for growing potatoes.”
From the beginning, the Ebbessons decided the farm would be organic and have completed all of the inspections and paperwork to get the official designation. After spending many years cultivating this unique piece of land, Sven and Barbara have decided it’s time to retire from the farm as well.

The cleared land is divided into 17 different fields ranging in size from 4 to 32 acres. Additionally, the property has been improved with a cabin, sauna and insulated barn.
