Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) July 19, 2014 -- Car accident fatalities may have fallen in 2014 across southern Nevada, but Las Vegas car accident lawyer Glenn A. Paternoster understands motorcyclists, pedestrians and other bystanders still face serious accident risks due to negligent drivers.
Paternoster, co-founder of Aaron & Paternoster, based his comments on a July 8, 2014, article published by ABC 13. According to the article, pedestrian and motorcyclist fatalities are rising sharply in Las Vegas and across southern Nevada.
The article cites drivers who engage in dangerous behavior – such as texting and driving or driving under the influence of alcohol – as primary reasons police believe fatality rates among pedestrians and motorcyclists are on the rise.
“It is without question good news to learn accident fatalities have fallen in 2014. But the revelation that motorcycle and pedestrian fatalities are on the rise, and that many fatalities are caused by reckless drivers, is troubling,” Paternoster said. “One pedestrian or bicyclist fatality caused by a drunk or texting driver is one too many. These are senseless tragedies that occurred because people made reckless choices.”
The study, which ABC 13 said was conducted by the Southern Nevada Traffic Safety Coalition, concluded that while traffic accident fatalities have declined from 2013 to 2014, motorcycle and pedestrian accident fatalities have risen sharply. Motorcycle accidents fatalities increased by 37 percent and pedestrians increased 50 percent, the article indicated.
Police officials told ABC 13 they believe that while educational efforts have had a positive effect throughout southern Nevada, more work must be done. This includes increased law enforcement efforts to crack down on distracted and drunk drivers, according to the ABC 13 news report.
“Drunk, distracted and reckless drivers injure and kill innocent people every day in Las Vegas and throughout Nevada” Paternoster said. “It’s critical for all drivers to remember that these dangerous behaviors put everyone on the road at risk – and especially those who operate motorcycles and others who may be crossing the street or walking along a sidewalk.”
Paternoster said injured pedestrians and motorcyclists should seek medical attention immediately after their crash, then contact a lawyer as soon as possible.
The ABC 13 article cited is “Traffic study shows road deaths down, more work needs to be done.”
