Laurus Technical Institute Announces New Welding Technology Program
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) August 21, 2013 -- Laurus Technical Institute (LTI) recently launched a Welding Technology program that prepares students for careers within the transportation, construction, manufacturing and power generation industries.
The comprehensive training program combines 25 percent classroom theory with 75 percent practical exercises in a welding lab equipped with multi-process and advanced-process welding machines, as well as other equipment to facilitate the craft. Students learn the four most common welding processes – stick, MIG, flux-core and TIG – and they learn to cut their own materials with oxyfuel and plasma cutting. Students practice more than 80 exercises with increasing difficulty to advance their craft and develop proper technique. At the end of the program, students prepare for relevant weld testing and certifications for their specific career path.
The six-month program was developed by Wayne Blamire and Matthew Rogers, who each have more than 30 years’ welding and teaching experience. “This program is focused on training premier welding students and positioning graduates to know much more about the craft than burning rods. Being able to weld is important, but understanding the factors that make a good welder enables our students to navigate among processes, filler metals, base materials and numerous other variables that come into play,” says Rogers, the program’s manager. “We are very excited to showcase our graduates to employers.”
LTI’s programs are designed to train students for careers faster than four-year universities or two-year community colleges with intensive training that focuses heavily on fundamentals, practical experience and only courses that improve students’ skill sets for a particular career within an industry. LTI’s graduates complete their training and are able to begin earning 12 to 18 months before those attending a two-year institution. The program is heavily focused on the circumstances and job requirements that welders will experience while on the job.
Steve Austin, LTI’s Chief Academic Officer, explains that Laurus places “a heavy emphasis on preparing students to fulfill employers’ needs.” In addition, LTI offers career services where graduates receive information and help finding gainful employment.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, welding opportunities are expected to increase 15 percent from 2010 to 2020, about as fast as the average occupation. However, the industry has emphasized that experienced welders are retiring faster than they can be replaced. Laurus is training welders and identifying career opportunities to help close the labor gap within the industry. Welders are typically paid an hourly wage rather than a monthly salary, with the average hourly rate for welders in the Atlanta area between $12.50 and $29, according to http://www.salary.com/.
