According to court documents, on June 18, 2008, Cecil Thomas, 56, was undergoing a routine MRI at Coastal Neurological Institute when he suffered a serious allergic reaction to the MRI contrast agent, which is a chemical "dye" inserted into the bloodstream to enhance the resolution of the MRI. Gadolinium or some other metal is often used as a contrast agent, and the possibility of a severe allergic reaction is well-known in the medical community. An anaphylactic reaction to an MRI contrast agent can lead to death if not quickly treated. At trial, expert witness testimony indicated that death can often be avoided by the simple administration of epinephrine when given in a timely manner.
In the tragic death of Mr. Thomas, trial records indicate that facts were introduced at trial that the patient never received any epinephrine from the medical office and it was only after the paramedics arrived that appropriate treatment was attempted. In his closing arguments to the jury, attorney Ty Brown said, "this family has been looking for answers to why Mr. Thomas had to die for six years and they deserve justice."
