St. Paul, MN (PRWEB) August 05, 2014 -- Lawrence Sign is honored to have been selected, once again, to light up the iconic Schmidt Brewery sign. Lawrence Sign designed, fabricated and installed the original sign in the 1940s and was awarded the project of lighting it once again.
The new Schmidt Brewery sign sits atop the original brewery site located in the West 7th Street neighborhood in St. Paul, Minnesota. The Schmidt Brewery had a long history at this location until it was sold to Minnesota Brewing Co. in the 1990s.
In early 2013, Dave Peltier, third generation sign maker and account executive at Lawrence Sign, learned of Dominium Development and Acquisition’s plans to redevelop the Schmidt Brewery site into artist lofts and reached out to the general contractor, Weis Builders. Since Lawrence Sign built the original letter sets, Peltier proposed his case for the opportunity to once again provide exterior signage for the historic site.
Working closely with Dominium, Weis and the St. Paul Historic Preservation Committee, Lawrence Sign was granted approval to fabricate the Schmidt Brewery sign.
Lawrence Sign enjoyed partnering with Weis while rebuilding the sign. “To the city of St. Paul, its residents and the St. Paul Historic Preservation Committee, replicating the look and functionality of the original sign was absolutely critical to preserving the significance of such a historic landmark,” said Peltier.
The sign is more than 18 feet tall and 80 feet wide. The letters are fabricated out of aluminum and feature energy-efficient LED lights. With approval from the city and several preservation and community groups, the red letters flash one-by-one until the sign is fully lit—just like the original.
The official lighting ceremony for the Schmidt Brewery sign appropriately took place on June 21, 2014, during the inaugural GermanFest celebration held at the brewery.
