Learning.com Announces New Lessons for Helping Young Learners Build Coding Skills
Portland, Ore (PRWEB) June 02, 2016 -- When kids go back to school in the fall, they might find the curriculum has expanded to reading, math, science, social studies and coding, even in kindergarten. To support the movement to make coding the “fifth core subject,” Learning.com today announced EasyCode, an intuitive, teacher-friendly digital curriculum for introducing coding skills to elementary and middle school students.
EasyCode is illustrative of Learning.com’s commitment to President Obama’s Computer Science for All initiative, which empowers all students from kindergarten through high school to learn computer science and develop the computational thinking skills necessary to spur the transition from consumer to creator in today’s digital economy. Parents are calling for more coding instruction in schools as well. According to a recent Gallup and Google poll, nine out of 10 parents want their children to learn to code.
“Teaching computer science in schools isn’t new – it has been an elective in high schools for many years. What is new and exciting is the idea of a kindergartner learning to code, a third grader creating an app, and the notion of computer science as the ‘fifth core subject area’ alongside English/language arts, math, social studies and science,” said Learning.com CEO Keith Oelrich. “Gone are the days when the need for these skills was limited to tech or programming positions. Today, all employers – from retail to healthcare to manufacturing – want to hire employees who have a foundation in computational thinking. Schools must now provide a curriculum to support developing these skills, starting in the youngest grades, to prepare students for high school, college and their future careers."
EasyCode is a plug-in to EasyTech, Learning.com’s award-winning digital literacy curriculum for elementary and middle school students. EasyCode offers sequences that align with and support Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA) standards, as do the recently introduced Foundations of Coding lessons, which are also included with EasyTech. Available for back-to-school 2016, EasyCode offers K-8 educators a turnkey instructional solution that integrates student challenges, progress monitoring, and professional development so educators can quickly and efficiently introduce coding skills to elementary and middle-school students. EasyCode features 200+ challenges as a plug-in to the EasyTech digital literacy curriculum and provides teachers with a variety of support tools including webinars and lesson plans to assist with implementation.
