Bloomberg has reportedly said that the current high-pressure sodium street lights have a lifespan of six years, compared to LED street lights which can last up to 20 years.
New York City has already installed the energy efficient LED lighting in Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn, as well as along footpaths in Central Park, the Franklin D. Roosevelt East River Drive (FDR) and lights on the cables of East River bridges. The four year initiative to replace all street lights with LED alternatives throughout the boroughs of New York is thought to be the largest retrofit in the country.
CBS New York reports that Mayor Michael Bloomberg said that:
“LEDs are the wave of the future. They last forever and they use a lot less energy. The plan is for all city streets to be lit up with LEDs by 2017 and doing that will save New York City taxpayers a net of some $14 million a year.”
