Experts have raised concerns that the gas and electricity levels have dropped due to a falling level of output from the north sea, to a level which could lead to the biggest threat of black outs since the winter of 2007/2008.
The main concern is that the winter will be long and harsh – if it is the demand for electricity will be greater putting extra strain on the resources that are currently available. With the closure of polluting coal-fired power stations and no replacement, the problem is increased. Wind and solar plants provide a slight buffer but the required amount of stations isn’t available to prevent the likeliness of black outs.
