Lefties are known for being both funny and creative. An astonishingly high percentage of comedians are left-handed (Jon Steward, Tina Fey, Dan Akroyd, Jerry Seinfeld, Charlie Chaplin, .....), as are artists (ranging from Leonardo da Vinci, Toulouse Lautrec, and Paul Klee, to M.C. Esher and R. Crumb). On top of this, left-handers historically have been vilified as evil or threatening. The words for left or left-handed in many languages are negative, even scary! Consider "sinister", derived from the Latin word for left!
Lefty's San Francisco wonders if left-handers carve more extraordinary pumpkins than righties. This contest is intended to provide a showplace for left-handed artists with a special affection for sinister comedy!
On top of the artistic challenge to carve the best pumpkins, left-handers also face a physical challenge. Carving tools like knives and even box cutters are designed for right-handers. Lefty's has two lefty tools that many carvers can use - the left-handed box cutter, has the sliding control on the left face rather than the right, and the left-handed "Perfect Peeler", which has an ergonomic lefty grip, and a head that can rotate into 3 different positions - vertical, horizontal, and 45 degrees.
