Lewis N. Clark Partners with the National Forest Foundation
Elk Grove Village, IL (PRWEB) December 11, 2015 -- Lewis N. Clark® is excited to partner with the National Forest Foundation (NFF). In addition to its work across the US, one of the NFF’s projects includes restoring a part of natural tallgrass prairie land in Illinois. Only one-tenth of one percent of tallgrass prairie remains due to development and agricultural use.
“Lewis N. Clark’s support will enable the NFF to continue our work at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie. Midewin is a unique landscape, just an hour southwest of Chicago,” said Greg Peters, Director of Communications.
Some of the work includes removing ammunition bunkers, drain tiles, roads, and railroad structures, as well as engaging the public in planting native plants and improving recreational opportunities for the greater Chicago area. The NFF recently spearheaded an effort to bring a herd of 27 bison to Midewin. In addition to the newly arrived bison, tallgrass prairies provide a home for 27 species of mammals, 149 species of birds, 40 aquatic species, and a number of reptiles and amphibians, in addition to countless forbs, flowers, and trees.
“The NFF’s work at Midewin is close to our brand’s heart being that it is located in our backyard here in Chicagoland, and the fact that both the bison and natural prairie land are such a great part of our American heritage,” said Jen Panattoni, Director of Business Development.
For those who are interested in protecting forests and grasslands, Peters recommends getting involved with volunteer groups to participate in stewardship activities on public lands, taking friends and family to public lands to connect them with nature, supporting organizations like the NFF through donations or volunteering, and following “Leave No Trace” and “Tread Lightly” protocols.
