Lewis University Offers Graduate Programs in Curriculum and Instruction
Romeoville, IL (PRWEB) October 22, 2013 -- Lewis University now offers four graduate programs in Curriculum and Instruction entirely online. The master’s program and three certificates meet the needs of students with different educational goals.
All incorporate the most current theories and practices in instructional techniques and curriculum design for the K-12 context. Programs are designed to give teachers the advanced knowledge and critical thinking skills to engage and inspire their students in the classroom, including those with varying learning styles, cultural backgrounds and individual needs.
The online Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction was designed in response to the implementation of Common Core standards and a growing emphasis on student outcomes. The curriculum provides strategies and skills for this challenging environment. Students learn how to incorporate technology into lessons and learning, study assessment tools and methods for monitoring learning progress, and develop leadership skills for making positive changes in the classroom and the school. “The online programs in Curriculum and Instruction do more than just provide advanced knowledge in an increasingly important aspect of teaching,” said Dr. Pam Jessee, Dean of the College of Education, Lewis University. “They are designed to transform students into advocates for social justice and expert educators able to engage a diverse, multicultural classroom.”
The online Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction at Lewis is further distinguished among programs of its kind by three specializations, which delve deeper into current K-12 education issues.
The Reading specialization focuses on nurturing literacy and a love of reading with coursework in reading assessment, literature and writing skills, and the most effective teaching methods in this area.
The English as a Second Language specialization explores helping students improve their English speaking, reading and comprehension skills. Topics include relevant cultural and linguistic issues, state and national standards, and appropriate methodologies for teaching and assessment.
Special Education focuses on assisting students with learning challenges through an understanding of their needs, potential disorders and the most effective assessment techniques of those with academic and/or behavior problems.
These specializations are also available as 18-credit-hour, stand-alone graduate certificate programs for those who want to focus on specific educational issues without earning the full master’s degree. Students in the certificate programs take three courses in the area of specialization and three core courses.
