Lexington Christian Academy's Academics In Action Program Brings Learning to Life
Lexington, MA (PRWEB) May 03, 2017 -- During the week of March 20th-24th, students at Lexington Christian Academy returned from their spring break for a week of alternative classes under the school’s Academics in Action program. Throughout the week, middle and high school students each engaged in their choice of two entertaining and thought-provoking courses such as personal finance, audio engineering, understanding how technology works, and even maple syrup production.
Each year, the Academics in Action program provides LCA students with opportunities for extended study of nontraditional subjects and learning about the passions of LCA teachers and community instructors. LCA teachers are passionate about their academic subjects throughout the year, but they also take joy in sharing their other life passions and instilling newfound interests in their pupils. Said 12th Grader Peter Walsh, “Over the years, I’ve gained knowledge from Academics in Action on subjects I never would have learned about at another school. I’ve also bonded with my teachers both during that week and onwards, knowing more about their hobbies and interests. It’s been great to share that with them.”
In one course, A Taste of the World - A cultural buffet, LCA students researched Korea, India, Venezuela, Lebanon and China over 5 days, looking at the environmental, historical and cultural influences on the cuisines of each country.
"I had no idea that beans are so important and are a staple in every country we studied," commented Angelina Swaim '17 of Bedford, MA.
Partnering with area restaurants striving to remain authentic and true to their cultural roots, the students traveled to experience the cuisines that they studied previously. The owners of the restaurants, proud of their heritage, passionate about their food and eager to share their country's culture with students, came out to share how foods are prepared, what are traditional ingredients and often offered complimentary drinks or dishes for the students to try.
Virsa De Punjab in Bedford, MA, even opened their doors an hour early to welcome the students and to offer them first access to their authentic North Indian buffet. The students also had the opportunity to learn more about the tandoor oven and watched how the chefs prepare their coveted naan, a traditional oven-baked flatbread.

LCA Head of School Tim Russell spoke highly of this year’s program. “Academics in Action is just another example of the wealth of opportunities that are on display here at LCA,” said Russell. “I was delighted by the work of director Mary Bulger, and was amazed at the talents and inquiry on display during this extraordinary week.”
The success of this year’s Academics in Action program provided another example of the diversity of opportunity that is available to students who choose to attend LCA.
