Life Line Screening's dietitian and health coach offers obesity prevention tips to help combat the UK's obesity epidemic
Worthing, West Sussex (PRWEB UK) 23 June 2014 -- With these figures, a catastrophic sign for the potential future of the UK’s residents Life Line Screening’s dietitian and health coach, Andrew Wilson, is sharing his best lifestyle tips to help stop what is a growing yet avoidable problem.
Research shows that last year saw 163,000 new cases of diabetes in the UK with obesity cited as a main contributing factor. People are also at risk from heart disease and stroke if they combine a sedentary lifestyle with poor diet.
“Diet and lifestyle habits play an important part in preventing obesity and sustainably reducing our risk of developing heart disease, stroke, and type-2 diabetes,” says Andrew Wilson.
“There are simple ways you can improve your diet without cutting out the foods you love altogether; it’s about developing healthy habits that help you stick to a new routine.”
Andrew’s tips for battling obesity include:
Getting a health check: The best way to fight obesity is to actually know what people are fighting against and need to change. A health screening will outline the status of people’s overall health and help underline the positive lifestyle changes that need to be made.
Becoming more active: A more active lifestyle boosts the metabolism and helps maintain a healthy, consistent weight. As well as exercise, other small changes can help – taking the stairs instead of the lift for instance, or parking further away from a destination for a short walk.
Being wary of low-fat labels: Foods labelled ‘fat-free’ or ‘low-fat’ typically have more sugar or salt in them to compensate for the lost taste of their full-fat counterparts. Concentrating on good fats such as those in olive oil, nuts, seeds, and fish keeps the heart healthy and reduces the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
Staying hydrated: Drinking water at regular intervals can help people feel fuller, stopping them snacking and overeating. Water also helps boost energy levels and is essential for removing toxins from the body.
Shopping with a list: Writing a shopping list with healthy food and sticking to it when out shopping helps people stick to diets and makes them less likely to fill their baskets with crisps, chocolate, and other food containing bad fats.
Cutting sugar intake by half: Diets laden with sugar is one of the largest factors contributing to rising obesity levels. Doctors recommend sugar levels be reduced by 50 per cent to avoid further risk of obesity-related diseases.
