Life Support Technologies Group Guides Third Hospital to Earn Top Distinction in Hyperbaric Medicine
Tarrytown, NY (PRWEB) December 26, 2014 -- The Life Support Technologies group (LST) has partnered with HealthAlliance of the Hudson Valley – Broadway Campus’ (HAHV - Kingston, NY) Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center for over five years and has now guided it through a vigorous program review that has resulted in HAHV being awarded Re-Accreditation with Distinction by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS). This is the third hospital in NY State that LST has guided to this accolade.
HAHV’s Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center was initially accredited by the UHMS in June 2011, when HAHV’s Broadway Campus was officially known as The Kingston Hospital. HAHV uses a comprehensive approach to treating wounds, which may include nutritional counseling, resolution of infections, surgical debridement, skin grafting, and the adjunctive use of hyperbaric oxygen. The Limb Salvage Program is critical for those at risk of amputation, especially diabetics. More than 5 million Americans suffer from non-healing wounds.
Hyperbaric Medicine incorporates a specially designed chamber in which a patient can be treated at greater atmospheric pressure while breathing pure oxygen. This triggers several mechanisms, including angiogenesis (regrowth of capillaries), bactericide, and oxygenation. These mechanisms of hyperbaric oxygen have been scientifically proven to benefit various medical conditions, including non-healing wounds, bone and soft-tissue infections, and radiation tissue damage. A typical treatment for a non-healing wound lasts for about two hours at increased pressures between 2 - 2.5 atmospheres absolute, and is repeated daily for 20 or more sessions depending on the severity of the wound. The Institute offers two oversized, private hyperbaric chambers where patients can relax and listen to music or watch a movie.
HAHV’s Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center is only the third facility in the lower NY State region to provide this level of service, according to the UHMS, the leading hyperbaric medicine authority in the nation. Recently, LST guided the Hudson Valley Hospital Center in Cortlandt Manor, NY and Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center, Suffern, NY to obtain reaccreditation with distinction. The only other Hospital in New York State to achieve this is Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, a 400-bed teaching hospital.

The UHMS’s rapidly growing Clinical Hyperbaric Facilities Accreditation Program currently has 155 accredited hyperbaric medicine services nationally. UHMS accreditation is increasingly being required by commercial insurances for patient treatment approval and reimbursement.
