Lifestyle Medicine Global Alliance Convenes Next Week, Part of American College of Lifestyle Medicine’s Annual Conference
Tucson, Ariz. (PRWEB) October 19, 2017 -- The American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) today announced it will host the first-ever Lifestyle Medicine Global Alliance (LMGA) meeting during its upcoming annual conference, Lifestyle Medicine 2017, October 22-25 in Tucson, Ariz. The LMGA inaugural meeting is expected to attract physicians and other health professionals from more than 30 countries.
“Lifestyle medicine is exploding around the world as the fastest growing field of medicine, and professional physician-led associations are being formed on every continent,” said ACLM Executive Director Susan Benigas. “The world over, physicians are recognizing lifestyle therapies as a preferred first-option treatment for chronic conditions and many autoimmune conditions, as well. ACLM is proud to have facilitated the formation of the Lifestyle Medicine Global Alliance, serving to connect ACLM with its sister organizations across the globe. LMGA represents a galvanizing force for change, advocating for prescribing optimal lifestyle behaviors as the foundation of health and economic solvency.”
Chronic diseases are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality and are responsible for the vast majority of health care expenditures. The World Health Organization now recognizes non-communicable disease, as opposed to infectious disease, as the world’s looming pandemic. More than 80 percent of chronic conditions could be avoided through the adoption of healthful lifestyle recommendations; yet minimal information is provided to patients due to various factors, including lack of lifestyle therapy training in medical school. Professional associations that are part of the LMGA, including the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, promote an evidence-based, lifestyle medicine-first approach to healthcare, wherein lifestyle is used as a therapeutic intervention to prevent, treat and even reverse disease.
“There is a sense of urgency to trumpet the message of the efficacy of lifestyle medicine, as so many countries around the world are plagued with populations experiencing an alarming rise in non-communicable disease trends—what we refer to in the U.S. as chronic disease,” emphasized Margarete Ezinwa, MD, director of the Lifestyle Medicine Global Alliance. “None of us can conquer this alone, but, as a united force, we can eradicate non-communicable disease through global collaboration, promoting simple sustainable lifestyle change.”
