LimeBike Launches America’s First Dockless Bike Sharing Program at UNCG
San Francisco, California (PRWEB) June 02, 2017 -- In partnership with The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), California-based LimeBike announced today the deployment of America’s first dockless bike sharing program by rolling out 125 bikes for use on and around the UNCG campus. With a vision to revolutionize campus and urban mobility, LimeBike systematically deploys free-floating smart-bikes, enabled with GPS, wireless technology, and integrated self-activating locks. The deployment of 125 bikes today at UNCG marks the first time that a dockless bike sharing program has been launched in the United States with the approval and collaboration of local officials.
“We started LimeBike with a vision to empower residents with a greener, more efficient transportation alternative and to vastly improve urban mobility,” says Toby Sun, CEO and Co-Founder of LimeBike. “The deployment of LimeBikes at UNCG marks a turning point for urban sustainability. We believe that universities, municipalities, and companies around the world will see the immediate social and economic impacts that bike sharing has on local communities. We are excited about our upcoming partnerships with private and public institutions who we believe will be clamoring for LimeBike to create a network in their locality.”
LimeBike offers riders fast, easy and affordable bike access. Rides will cost just 50 cents per 30-minute time block for UNCG students and $1 for non-student riders. All of the bright green LimeBikes are GPS-enabled, making it simple for riders to find, unlock and pick-up a nearby bike using one of our smartphone apps. LimeBike’s dockless network eliminates the time and hassle of having to return bikes to a docking station. When the rider is finished, they simply lock the bike where they want to leave it and see the final statistics for a ride instantaneously on their smartphone.
"Our student body was clear about their need for an easy and sustainable transit solution,” says Suzanne Williams, Associate Director of Campus Access Management at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. “LimeBike provides a long-lasting solution at no cost to the university and on-the-ground operations support. This partnership was a win-win for us."
Funded by Silicon Valley’s leading VC firm Andreessen Horowitz, LimeBike currently operates in North Carolina and California, with Seattle and other states to follow. Traditional bike sharing systems charge cities up to $5,000 per bike including docking stations and overall maintenance. LimeBike has done away with stations and other costly overhead in order to operate on a subsidy-free model; only by riders who use LimeBike will pay for LimeBike. LimeBike is also committed to working closely with local key stakeholders to design and execute a customized system that can easily be incorporated into any existing transportation plan.
