Lindsey Munday Named Lacrosse Magazine Person of the Year
Baltimore, MD (PRWEB) November 20, 2013 -- Lacrosse Magazine, the flagship publication of US Lacrosse, has named U.S. Women’s National Team captain and University of Southern California women’s lacrosse head coach Lindsey Munday its 2013 Person of the Year.
One of the most talented players in the game today, Munday scored nine goals and handed out 14 assists to earn All-World Team honors as an attacker in leading Team USA to a record seventh gold medal with a 7-0 mark in the 2013 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Cup in Oshawa, Ontario. Elected captain by a team full of All-World players, collegiate All-Americans and Tewaaraton Award winners, Munday led the Americans to the World Cup’s most dominant run, as they outscored opponents by an FIL record 13.2 goals per game.
The triumph in Canada came after Munday led the Trojans’ inaugural varsity women’s lacrosse team to eight wins and a berth in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament in the 2013 season. She became USC’s first head coach in January 2011.

Munday’s gold medal this summer was her second. She scored 17 goals and had 20 assists in the 2009 World Cup, where she helped the U.S. reclaim the championship from Australia and earned a spot on the All-World Team. Munday played collegiately at Northwestern University from 2003-06, where she graduated as the school’s all-time leader in assists (128) and remains one of its most decorated players. She led Northwestern to NCAA championships in 2005 and 2006 and twice was a finalist for the Tewaaraton Award. The two-time first-team IWLCA All-American graduated ranked third in career points (268) and fifth in goals (140) at Northwestern, where the Wildcats posted a 64-12 record during her playing career.
Munday did not travel far after graduation, serving as an assistant coach at her alma mater from 2007-10. She helped the Wildcats to three more NCAA titles and an 85-4 record. Munday briefly served as the head coach at Mount St. Mary’s University before being hired at USC shortly following the school’s decision to sponsor varsity women’s lacrosse.
Munday is a frequent clinician at US Lacrosse National Team Clinics for youth players each year. She will speak at the US Lacrosse National Convention, presented by Champion, Jan. 10-12, 2014, in Philadelphia, and will play at the Champion Challenge, a US Lacrosse event, Jan. 25-26 in Orlando.
US Lacrosse initiated Lacrosse Magazine’s Person of the Year in 2007, and it is an honor reserved for the person who has had a tremendous positive influence on the sport and transcended all levels of the game. Previous winners include Duke University men’s coach John Danowski (2007), Northwestern University women’s coach Kelly Amonte Hiller (2008), University of Denver men’s coach Bill Tierney (2009), Long Island Lizards player Tim Goettelmann (2010), University of Michigan men’s coach John Paul (2011), and Federation of International Lacrosse director of development and National Hall of Famer Tom Hayes (2012).
