Lipitor Lawsuit News: Bernstein Liebhard LLP Notes New Study Linking Statin Use to Increased Risk of Thyroid Cancer in Women
New York, New York (PRWEB) December 19, 2014 -- As Lipitor lawsuits (http://www.lipitorlawsuitcenter.com/) continue to move forward in U.S. courts, Bernstein Liebhard LLP notes that a new study has suggested an association between the regular use of statins like Lipitor and the development of thyroid cancer among women. The research, which appeared in the November issue of the Journal of Endocrinology, compared 500 thyroid cancer patients with 2,500 others who did not have the disease. The researchers found that the incidence of thyroid cancer was significantly associated with regular statin use among female patients. However, a similar correlation was not seen among patients who were irregular users of statins, or male users of the drugs.*
“The publication of this study comes as hundreds of plaintiffs pursue Lipitor lawsuits that allege the statin increases the risk of Type 2 diabetes, particularly in older women. These findings serve to remind that Lipitor can be associated with some significant side effects,” says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing victims of defective drugs and medical devices. The Firm is currently offering free and confidential case reviews to individuals who may have been harmed by Lipitor.
Lipitor Diabetes Litigation
Statins like Lipitor are used to lower cholesterol in conjunction with diet and exercise. In February 2012, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) announced that the labels for Lipitor and other statins would be updated to include new information about their potential association with Type 2 diabetes. The FDA announcement followed the publication of a study in JAMA: Internal Medicine the previous month which suggested that post-menopausal women treated with statins faced an increased risk of developing new-onset Type 2 diabetes. **
Since then, Lipitor lawsuits filed on behalf of patients who allegedly developed new-onset diabetes due to its use continue to mount in U.S. courts. Court documents indicate that the majority of these claims are pending in a federal multidistrict litigation underway in U.S. District Court, District of South Carolina, where more than 1,400 cases have been filed. Among other thing, plaintiffs accuse Pfizer Inc. of a concealing the association between Lipitor and diabetes in order to protect sales of the drug. They further allege that the label modifications made by Pfizer in 2012 still do not adequately address this risk. (In re Lipitor (Atorvastatin) Litigation, MDL No. 2502)
Type 2 diabetes patients who allegedly developed the disease due to their use of Lipitor may be entitled to compensation from Pfizer. To learn more about filing a Lipitor lawsuit, please visit Bernstein Liebhard LLP’s website. To arrange for a free case review, please call 800-511-5092.
