The Lipitor lawsuits allege that Lipitor-manufacturer Pfizer Inc., failed to adequately warn doctors and their patients about the risk of developing diabetes and negligently and recklessly marketed the medication without giving adequate warnings or instructions.

Lipitor-diabetes-LawsuitsLipitor (atorvastatin calcium) is a statin drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1996 to reduce low-density lipoprotein, better known as bad cholesterol, and to reduce the risk of stroke, and heart problems in people with Type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease. In February 2012, the FDA ordered statin drug manufacturers, including Pfizer Inc., to revise their safety labels to reflect the serious risks of developing memory loss and confusion and increased blood sugar when taking cholesterol-lowering drugs. The FDA expanded its safety information two years later on statins to explain how people taking cholesterol-lowering medications may have an increased risk of raised blood sugar levels and of developing Type 2 diabetes.

A recent study published in the November 2014 issue of the Clinical Endocrinology medical journal found that Lipitor and other cholesterol-lowering statin drugs may increase a woman’s risk of developing thyroid cancer. Researchers from Taipei Medical University Hospital undertook a case-controlled study using an insurance database. The study examined 500 subjects with thyroid cancer as cases and 2,500 subjects without thyroid cancer as controls. Researchers determined that prior statin use for cases was 39 percent higher compared to controls and thyroid cancer was significantly associated with previous statin use. Study further showed thyroid cancer was not significantly associated with previous irregular statin use. In addition, the significant association between thyroid cancer and previous statin use only existed for females but not for males.

While Lipitor lawsuits allege that the statin medication causes users to develop Type 2 diabetes, a study published in the December 2014 issue of the Canadian Journal of Cardiology suggests that statin medications, such as Lipitor, place users at risk for cataracts and the need for surgical intervention. Researchers used data from 162,500 female and male patients in British Columbia and the United States who developed cataracts. The study found that the British Columbia patients using statins were 27 percent more likely to have cataracts requiring surgical intervention and the U.S. patients using statin drugs were 7 percent more likely to have cataracts requiring surgical intervention. Researchers concluded that statin use is significantly associated with cataract requiring surgical intervention.
