Literary Icon Chris McCandless's Sister Discusses their Violent Childhood and How Chris Died at Peace on Maria Menounos's Book Circle Online
Los Angeles (PRWEB) November 25, 2014 -- On her abusive childhood being a factor in Chris wanting to live in the wild:
McCandless says, "I think it's important that people understand how much Chris was hurting when he left to explain why he left the way he did. It's one thing to go off into extreme adventures. It's another thing to do that and cut off all contact with your family, reinvent your identity."
The book does not always portray McCandless' parent's positively, but she says, "This book is written in no way to villainize my parents. It's to humanize them. People can't learn from the villains, they learn from humans."
On Chris dying at peace with the decisions that lead to his death:
McCandless says, "Chris died at peace. He was not happy to be dying in any form. He was devastated to be losing his life, but he was at peace with the choices that he had made." She says, "That emotion that you see coming through him is just pure emotion. He's dying. His face is skeletal, emaciated, and yet he's got this beautiful smile."
On Chris's distrust for people and desire for truth:
McCandless says, "Chris didn't trust relationships so much. There's "Happiness only real when shared" that he wrote in his book, and I write in my book about how when you turn the next page, it said, "Relationships: Those Real - Those False", which I found both hopeful and cautionary.
