Little Basin State Park and WOLF Outdoor Education School Go Green
Boulder Creek, California (PRWEB) February 25, 2015 -- Little Basin, a group campground of Big Basin Redwoods State Park, and the Web of Life Field (WOLF) School were recently certified “green” by the Monterey Bay Area Green Business Program.
WOLF School was the first outdoor science and environmental education school to be certified as a Green Business Partner in the Santa Cruz/Monterey area. The Monterey Bay Area Green Business Program is a successful partnership of environmental agencies, utilities and nonprofit organizations that assist, recognize and promote businesses and government agencies that volunteer to operate in a more environmentally responsible way. To be certified "green," participants must be in compliance with all regulations and meet program standards for conserving resources, preventing pollution and minimizing waste. The Green Business Program offers motivated businesses and agencies an easy-to-use framework for improving environmental performance.
"Going Green" means pursuing knowledge and practices that can lead to more environmentally friendly and ecologically responsible decisions and lifestyles, which can help protect the environment and sustain its natural resources for current and future generations.
The certification included several inspections by various professionals who examined practices that were already in place such as kitchen composting, and made some recommendations for change, such as blocking junk mail to reduce paper waste.
The assessors praised WOLF School and Little Basin Director Heather Butler and the camp’s employees for their work, and Maintenance Director Jay Mims’ initiative in having already changed over to more efficient, “green” energy by his own instigation. Heather was recognized at the Santa Cruz Board of Supervisor’s meeting recently for leading the charge for green business certification. The certification is an excellent demonstration of partnership between an outdoor education program and its hosting facility. This year, WOLF School’s environmental education students attending science camp at Little Basin will be able to learn about and attend a certified “green” camp.
Being a certified Green Business Partner, Little Basin and WOLF School will be listed on the “Green List” on the Green Business program website.
Little Basin and the WOLF School are operated by United Camps, Conferences and Retreats, a non-profit cooperative managing camps, retreats, and public lands throughout the United States.
