Austin, Texas (PRWEB) January 12, 2015 -- The LIVESTRONG Foundation announced that its Board of Directors approved the appointment of two new members and named Candice Toll Aaron as Chair-Elect to assume the role of Chairman of the Board in December of 2015. Dr. Lawrence Shulman and Cindy Sweeting will now serve on the board for a term of three years to replace outgoing board members Dr. Craig Nichols, Dr. Sanjay Gupta and Mitch Stoller, who left the LIVESTRONG Board after 17, seven and seven years of service, respectively.
Dr. Shulman currently serves as Chief of Staff and Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Harvard Medical School. He is also Director of the Dana-Farber’s Center for Global Cancer Medicine. He helps to oversee cancer programs in Rwanda and Haiti, together with Partners In Health, on whose Board he also serves. Dr. Shulman is the Chair of the Quality Integration Committee of the Commission on Cancer, an organization on which LIVESTRONG has active representation.
“We are thrilled to welcome Larry Shulman to the LIVESTRONG Board as his focus on serving the whole patient and especially in improving access to care are two of the hallmarks of the new LIVESTRONG Cancer Institutes launching under the Dell Medical School,” said Garvey. “Larry’s track record and commitment to improving the lives of cancer patients and survivors globally provides us with a unique perspective and expertise as we enter the next phase of our evolution.”
Sweeting is the President of Templeton Investment Counsel, LLC and Director of Portfolio Management for the Templeton Global Equity Group, which manages approximately $125 billion in global equity assets (as of 9/30/14) as part of the broader Franklin Templeton Investments organization. Her career as an international investment manager began in Nassau, Bahamas in 1983, and she has worked with the Franklin Templeton organization for the past 18 years, providing oversight and expertise to clients including multi-national corporations, state and regional pension funds, endowments and sovereign governments.
“Cindy Sweeting’s impressive financial acumen and global portfolio management skills will be an asset to the LIVESTRONG Board,” said Garvey. “Cindy’s personal experience combined with her business credentials distinctly qualify her to help us as we create the LIVESTRONG Cancer Institutes. As an 11-year cancer survivor, she brings a passion for our mission and understanding of what it means to be a patient that instantly make her a part of our LIVESTRONG family.”
Candice Aaron has served as a director on the LIVESTRONG Board since 2012 and is a member of the Board’s Executive Committee. She serves as Chief Compliance Officer for GE Capital’s equipment and commercial distribution financing segment, having risen through the ranks of the organization since joining GE Capital in 2009. Aaron is also an eight-year cancer survivor and one of the founders of LIVESTRONG’s Young Leaders Cancer Council, which encourages participation at the leadership level for a group of professionals under the age of 40.
“Candice’s contributions to LIVESTRONG both on the Board and through her other work with the Foundation perfectly position her to be the face of the next generation of leadership for the organization. We are extremely fortunate to have such a passionate voice and experienced businesswoman to be our next Chairman beginning in 2016,” said Garvey. “I am personally honored to work closely with her through this coming year as she prepares to take on the leadership of the Board of Directors.”
Garvey has confirmed that he plans to stand for re-election to the Board for one final three-year term beginning in December of 2015.
The announcements of the changes to the Board were made at the last meeting of the Board of Directors for 2014 which was held in Austin on December 12.
