Living Well Renews Respite Care Agreement with Family Caregiver Alliance
Tiburon, CA (PRWEB) July 09, 2015 -- Living Well is proud to announce the renewal of its agreement with Family Caregiver Alliance (FCA) as a respite care provider for the Alliance members. (https://caregiver.org)
FCA believes that caring for themselves is one of the most important things caregivers can do. When their needs are taken care of, the people they care for will benefit too. Even though many families take great joy in providing care to their loved ones so that they can remain at home, the physical, emotional and financial consequences for the family caregiver can be overwhelming without some support, such as respite. Respite provides a break for the family caregiver, which may prove beneficial to the health of the caregiver. Sixty percent of family caregivers between the ages of 19 and 64 surveyed recently by the Commonwealth Fund, reported fair or poor health, one or more chronic conditions, or a disability, compared with only 33 percent of non-caregivers.
Respite care is the provision of short-term accommodation for personal care in a facility outside the home in which a loved one may be placed or at home where the loved one resides. This provides temporary relief to those who are caring for family members, who might otherwise require permanent placement in a facility outside the home. The term "short break" is used in some countries to describe respite care. Respite care provides family caregivers with temporary relief from day-to-day caregiving tasks, varying from a few hours to several weeks. Respite services can be provided through in-home care agencies, adult day services, facilities that allow short-term stays, individuals hired directly or from friends and relatives willing to volunteer. Respite has been shown to help sustain family caregiver health and well-being, avoid or delay out-of-home placements, and reduce the likelihood of abuse and neglect. An outcome-based evaluation pilot study showed that respite may also reduce the likelihood of divorce and help sustain marriages.
Dr. Doris Bersing, Living Well CEO and President, reinforced FCA’s call for action, saying ”…Don't wait until you are overwhelmed and exhausted or your health fails. Respite services, as well as support groups with other caregivers and help from your family and friends, can be invaluable, Living Well is ready to provide the respite you need and/or refer you to support programs in the community…”
Living Well is proud to be part of the respite care resource pool used by FCA to support its members and their loved ones in need of care.
