LNESC and U.S. Army Combine STEM and ROTC Outreach to Texas Latino Students
Washington, D.C. (PRWEB) January 23, 2014 -- Texas Latino high school students will be pitched careers in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields through a U.S. Army college tour program that jointly promotes ROTC participation. The outreach to Latino students is a program sponsored by LULAC National Educational Service Centers, Inc. (LNESC).
The campus tours will take place this Friday at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, Corpus Christi, TX, and on January 31 at the University of Texas at El Paso, El Paso, TX. The orientation programs will be held at each location from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The outreach is geared toward high school juniors and seniors who have an interest in STEM careers. During the informational sessions, students will learn about the ROTC program and college admissions and financial aid guidelines.
"The U.S. Army is proud to partner with LNESC to support the college tours where students can learn firsthand about the impact that our young leaders are having in their local communities, both on and off campus. Army ROTC is looking for such aspiring leaders and provides numerous opportunities at more than 1300 universities and colleges for students that are dedicated to achieving their educational and personal goals," said COL James Dodson, 5th Brigade Commander, U.S. Army Cadet Command.
University faculty and staff, ROTC members and college students will help lead discussions and answer questions about various degrees and career opportunities. Students also will tour the university campuses.
"The campus tours provide high school students with the opportunity to learn more about the admissions process and financial aid which would otherwise not be possible without the support of the U.S. Army. By exposing students firsthand to campus life, we hope to make the college dream more of a reality,” said Richard Roybal, LNESC executive director.
LNESC and the U.S. Army have long partnered on outreach to high school students.
The Army is dedicated to closing the education gap and is the nation's largest provider of college scholarships, annually granting nearly $270 million in merit-based ROTC scholarships for youth to complete their college education. Further, the undergraduate engineering program at the U.S. Military Academy (USMA) at West Point is one of the oldest engineering schools in the U.S. and is recognized as having one of the top undergraduate engineering programs in the nation. Students pursuing degrees at West Point and through university ROTC programs receive world class leadership training, and upon graduation are commissioned as second lieutenants in the Army and can serve in a wide range of STEM related careers.
