LNESC Kicks Off 18th Annual Youth Leadership Conference
Washington, D.C. (PRWEB) October 02, 2015 -- Yesterday, LULAC National Educational Service Centers, Inc. (LNESC), the nation’s premier nonprofit educational organization and the educational arm of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) kicked off its 18th Annual Washington Youth Leadership Seminar (WYLS). The week-long event is a life-changing opportunity for Latino high school students to meet first-hand with the country’s most influential decision makers.
This year’s WYLS is sponsored by Nissan North America along with co-sponsors Walmart Foundation, Verizon Foundation, JP Morgan, and NBC Universal. The seminar encourages youth to initiate in grassroots efforts that will influence and strengthen their communities. In addition, the program prepares students on the most effective ways to successfully manage the college admissions process and how to develop a career plan by understanding their true strengths, skills, interests and personal values --- the lifelong foundation to a positive career identity.
"Nissan supports the Washington Youth Leadership Seminar because it highlights the numerous opportunities for Latinos in the STEM field. One thing we can do for this next generation of leaders is to show them that they have the skill sets and core values to be leaders, and to succeed wherever life takes them," states Jeffrey Webster, Director of Diversity and Inclusion for Nissan.
During the WYLS, participants will meet with U.S. Congressional Representatives, Latino professionals from National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), various Hispanic ERG Federal agencies, Fortune 500 corporate executives, national non-profit leaders, and George Washington University. These experts will address the students and discuss the importance of moving Latinos forward and provide them with the tools to enter the competitive workforce. The students will attend various workshops designed to inspire participants to explore different career options in science, engineering, medicine, business, government, and communications. “In our nation’s capital students have the opportunity to learn the legislative process and advocate on issues pressing the Latino community, such as higher education. Through the Washington Youth Leadership Seminar, we hope to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to become agents of change and implement what they have learned here in their communities.” Richard Roybal, Executive Director of LNESC.
