WARWICK, R.I. (PRWEB) January 26, 2018 -- David Mercier, COO of East Coast Hydroponic Warehouse—Rhode Island’s #1 horticultural supply store located on 380 Jefferson Boulevard in Warwick—is pursuing another new venture, one focused on developing land, employing local workers, and enhancing the quality of life for residents in the Misamis Oriental province of the Philippines.
“A major portion of the proceeds from our farms in Bayanga Cagayan de Oro and Gingoog goes directly to helping poor families in the Mindanao region,” says Mercier. And, by being employed by the farms, nearly a dozen local families are now able to send their children to high school, something they wouldn’t have been able to afford otherwise.
“I want to thank David for all he has done for our community,” says the Oscar Moreno, the mayor of Cagayan de Oro City (featured photo, at center, with David Mercier and friends). “Words cannot express how grateful we are to him.”
In addition to the 400 coconut trees harvested every quarter, Mercier’s three farms predominantly produce fast-growing falcata trees, which provide the raw material to make common household items such as paper, chopsticks, toothpicks, and matches.
“I am at my happiest when I start something from the ground up, whether it’s a business or a garden,” says Mercier. “With such incredible natural resources, this region of the Philippines was the perfect place to invest in agriculture. It was ripe for the planting, you could say. And I’m so glad I could help.”
David Mercier: A “Driven” Entrepreneur (with a Green Thumb)
Mercier is no stranger to starting a venture from the ground up. A true example of the American dream, he has achieved success over the years through a combination of hard work, determination, and enterprise. “I hope to be able to share all I’ve learned with my friends in the Philippines.” he says.
A native of Attleboro, MA, who now resides in Naragansett, RI, Mercier began his career in sales as a driver at Allied Auto parts, in Brockton, MA. In 1984, at just 19 years old, he became the franchise’s youngest manager, a record still held to this day. Mercier soon moved on to Dodge City, in Milford MA, and then Fireside Nissan in North Attleboro, where he was Top Salesman for four years. “I left Nissan to learn the used car business, venturing ultimately to run my own business,“ he says. After two years at Car Town USA—where he managed a portfolio worth in excess of $5 million—he then acquired both South Attleboro and North Attleboro Auto Sales.
In 2006, Mercier switched gears to pursue real estate investments. Two years later, spurred by his interest in horticulture, and specifically the possibilities of agriculture, he entered the arena of hydroponics supplies when he become the owner of Grow RI, in Westerly, and in 2014, acquired East Coast Hydroponic Warehouse Warwick, RI. An entrepreneur to the core, Mercier notes “I am always thinking of ways to improve my business.”
