Local Charity Debbie’s Closet Rounds Out Year of Record Giving
Detroit, MI (PRWEB) December 23, 2013 -- As 2013 comes to a close, Michigan-based non-profit organization Debbie’s Closet is finishing up a year of unprecedented impact on their local community. The group, which provides those who have fallen on hard times with living necessities like toiletries, kitchen appliances, bedding, mattresses, and more, was able to arrange aid for dozens of families across Metro Detroit over the course of the past 12 months.
“It’s been an incredibly rewarding experience,” says founder Debbie Rice. “These are hard-working people who just need a little help, and it warms our hearts to be of assistance. In the past 6 months alone, we’ve been able to get more than 20 children off of the floor and into their very own beds!”
The founding of Debbie’s Closet was actually inspired by events in Debbie’s own life. When her home burned down less than two weeks before Christmas in 1980, her family was left without a roof over their heads. It was ultimately the outpouring of love from family members, friends, and complete strangers that helped get them back on their feet. The experience caused her to pledge her life to others in need, and this year serves as a shining example of her dedication to helping others.
“Debbie’s Closet is really a testament to the value of working with smaller, local charitable groups,” explains donor and New Home Star CEO Dave Rice. “Unlike larger, national charities where overheads and resource competition can mitigate the impact of your donation, contributions to groups like Debbie’s Closet go directly to families in need.”
Those direct benefits were on full display this December. To finish off 2013, Debbie’s Closet worked with several other charitable groups in the area to host a holiday gathering that provided over 42 families with clothing, household supplies, and a warm meal. For the children in attendance, activities like face-painting and indoor inflatables served as entertainment, along with a visit from Santa Claus himself. The event was a rousing success, and has Debbie’s Closet eyeing even bigger plans for 2014.
