Local Columbia, Maryland Dental Office Receives Award from Howard County Public Schools
Columbia, Maryland (PRWEB) February 28, 2015 -- The Howard County Public School System awarded Smile Savers Dentistry for their Outstanding Volunteer Service during National Children's Dental Health Month. Each February, the American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors National Children's Dental Health Month (NCDHM) to raise awareness about the importance of oral health.
Staff members from Smile Savers Dentistry wrapped up NCDHM by visiting students at Lake Elkhorn Middle School in Columbia, MD. Dental hygienists Michaela Paschke and Bonnie Carroll, along with assistant Deanna Rohrman and Kelly Green talked to students about the importance of good oral hygiene. They went over important healthy home care habits such as brushing and flossing their teeth and also demonstrated what can happen if you don't brush. They also asked a student volunteer to brush their teeth as well as they did at home and then used a disclosing tablet to show where he missed brushing. Hygienist Michaela Paschke said “I thoroughly enjoyed going to Lake Elkhorn Middle School and teaching the kids about good hygiene and the risks of bad habits. It’s rewarding knowing that the kids walked away with a new outlook on taking care of their teeth.”
It's important for children to learn the importance of proper oral hygiene. Poor oral care behavior in under 12 year-olds contributes to many American children having cavities. Tooth decay is the number one chronic illness in children with over 51 million school hours lost each year due to dental problems. Research shows that if a child’s tooth decay goes untreated, it can lead to tooth loss, speech problems and even loss of self-esteem. According to the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),31 percent of kindergarten and third grade children in Maryland have tooth decay that, if left untreated, can cause pain and infections that may lead to problems with eating, speaking, playing and learning. Fortunately, with good oral health care habits, tooth decay can be prevented.
