Local Nonprofit to Host Fundraiser for Kids That Are “Going Places”
Charleston, SC (PRWEB) November 22, 2013 -- Be a Mentor is hosting their inaugural Going Places Gala on Thursday, December 5, at the South Carolina Aquarium. The event begins at 7 p.m. and will feature a silent auction that includes a trip for four to Disney World, a 2-night stay at Tides Hotel on Folly Beach with complimentary meals at their signature BLU restaurant, and an array of other exciting auction items. The feature item of the evening is a unique Maximo Nivel Spanish volunteer experience package. The winner may choose a destination of Costa Rica, Guatemala or Peru and will receive complimentary accommodations, two meals a day, airport pick-up, Spanish lessons and an incredible volunteer experience! The gala will showcase live music from Honeysmoke and heavy hors d’oeuvres and an open bar will be served. Tickets are $75 per person.
Be a Mentor will also be honoring four of the community’s most influential mentors at the Going Places Gala. Honorees include Jim Stelling, president of The GEL Group; Sam Lesky, campus pastor at Seacost Church; Priscilla Roper, director of human resources at Charleston Marine Containers, Inc; and Jessica Jackson, advisory board member for Be a Mentor.
“We are so excited to host our very first Going Places Gala and to raise awareness about the importance of mentoring in our community,” explains Brittany Mathis, public outreach coordinator. “There are so many at-risk kids right here in the Lowcountry that just need to know someone believes in them and through our programs at Be a Mentor , we’re able to connect them with positive, caring adults who will help prepare them for a successful future.”

Founded in 2004, Be a Mentor is a nonprofit organization headquartered in North Charleston, SC. There are currently three signature programs being implemented in various schools throughout the Lowcountry. The Lunch Buddy program fills the need for in-school mentoring for elementary and middle school children. Project SHINE focuses on career exploration, academic success and teaches the importance of setting and reaching goals at the middle school grade levels. The Career Path program matches mentors with high school students interested in similar career areas.
