Local South Jersey Firm Using Digital Technology to Document Historic Battleship New Jersey
Camden Waterfront, NJ (PRWEB) September 02, 2014 -- On Tuesday, August 19th, the local South Jersey geospatial services firm Haag 3D Solutions, LLC, a division of Haag Engineering, in conjunction with precision measurement solutions company Leica Geosystems, will digitally document our nation’s largest battleship, the Battleship New Jersey, on the Camden Waterfront, New Jersey. The all-volunteer project is being undertaken in preparation for the September 10th meeting of the West Jersey Chapter of the New Jersey Society of Professional Land Surveyors, which will be held on the Battleship.
HDS Documentation is a combination of 3D laser scanning, high dynamic range photography and standard survey techniques. The 3D laser scanner collects millions of individual data points, creating a 3D “point cloud.” The point clouds can be used to create highly accurate 2D and 3D representations and, when coupled with high dynamic range photography, photorealistic 3D models and virtual experiences that provide a compelling historical record.
This massive effort will require four scanning teams which will use Leica ScanStation HDS laser scanners to complete the project. An additional crew has been assigned to concentrate documentation efforts on the interior of the five-story number two gun turret, which was only just recently opened to visitors as a new tour. Portions of the number two gun turret are still difficult to access.
The results of the HDS Documentation will be used by the Battleship New Jersey Museum and Memorial as a historical record and for ongoing maintenance and educational purposes. There is also the potential to create a virtual tour for veterans and other individuals who might be unable to tour the physical battleship.
