Local Students Offered Introduction to Law through GJEL’s Summer Program
Orinda, CA (PRWEB) July 31, 2014 -- Last week, Northern California personal injury specialists, GJEL Accident Attorneys hosted a five-day summer internship program for high school students interested in learning more about a future career in law. The program, now in its second year, allows high school students to get a first hand look at the inner workings of a law firm while also gaining a basic overview of the legal process and criminal justice system.
Fourteen students from twelve different high schools were selected to participate in the program. The students met at GJEL’s main office in Orinda, where curriculum included lectures on civil procedure and criminal law basics, a wide range of guest speakers, and even a session on how to prepare for and apply to law school.
The students were given the opportunity to sit in on a trial at the Alameda County Superior Court and later return to the office for a Q&A and debriefing with GJEL partner Kristin Lucey. One participant cited this experience as their favorite part of the internship, saying, “It was such an interesting and fun case. I learned so much from it and it’s something that I’ll definitely never forget.”
For other students, highlights included; acting as a mock jury in which facts from a previous case were presented and students were asked to decide on a verdict, having questions answered by successful private and public sector attorneys, and getting a feel for the diverse set of careers available within the field of law.
At the conclusion of the internship, GJEL partner Andy Gillin said, “This was a fantastic group of students and we were delighted to spend a week teaching them a little bit about what goes on in our field.”
Based on the positive feedback from each of the participants, GJEL plans to continue the program in 2015. “This year was even better than last in terms of the variety of speakers and the breadth of knowledge we were able to pass along,” said Gillin. “We look forward to building on this year’s success and welcoming in a new batch of students next summer.”
